消化道出血一般分為上消化道和下消化道的出血，上消化道出血是指十二指腸、屈氏韌帶以上的出血，包括以下幾個內容，可能消化性潰瘍，就包括胃或者是十二指腸潰瘍。
另外，急性胃黏膜病變，比如服用了阿司匹林、波立維（等）活血化瘀藥物之后，出現(xiàn)了出血，同時食管胃靜脈曲張破裂出血所導致消化道出血，就是胃癌，是比較常見疾病，是上消化道出血，而下消化道出血是指十二指腸屈氏韌帶以下的、空腸、回腸、結直腸的病變引起出血，其中90%的病變都是來源于結直腸的息肉或者是腫瘤引起來的出血，另外其疾病，比如空回腸的病變，包括的纖維樣的息肉，包括腫瘤、痔瘡的病變，還有全身的彌漫性的病變，比如DIC，也會引起消化道出血。
