耳朵里流膿水意味著有化膿性的炎癥，這種炎癥通常指兩個方面，一個是外耳道的炎癥，一個是中耳的炎癥。
外耳道的炎癥流膿水還疼，因為流膿水引起耳廓皮膚的炎癥，引起軟骨炎軟骨膜炎。如果流了膿水不疼痛，說明骨軟骨壞死了，這種壞死有時會造成耳廓畸形。
中耳的炎癥一旦流膿水，疼痛反而會減輕，有搏動性的溢膿的這種情況，而且是黏膿黏黏的，跟外耳道皮膚感染性的膿是不太一樣的，有黏稠性，甚至于有一種膿臭味兒，往往意味著感染比較嚴重。
