女性生殖器皰疹具有傳染性。主要的傳染期是在皰疹發(fā)作期還有皰疹發(fā)作的前驅期，這時候局部的皮膚粘膜還有水泡里含有較多的皰疹病毒顆粒，如果與其發(fā)生直接的密切接觸，就有可能被感染。
一般是通過一些不潔的性行為感染病毒，然后經過一周左右的潛伏期，會在局部出現(xiàn)群集性的皰疹，有時還會伴有全身癥狀。水泡一般在2~4天會破潰、糜爛，經過1~2周會自行痊愈、但是皰疹病毒會在體內神經節(jié)中長期潛伏，當機體的免疫力下降時，皰疹病毒會重新活化，進而引起局部皮膚出現(xiàn)皰疹的癥狀復發(fā)。
