肺膿腫由于化膿性的細菌感染所引起來的肺部非組織的化膿性疾病，常在睡眠時口咽部細菌可能會被吸入，身體抵抗力好時候很快就能清除，吸入量較多，或身體抵抗力下降時會致病形成肺膿腫。
早期是炎性表現(xiàn)，進而壞死形成膿腫，形成含有膿液及壞死碎屑的空腔、空洞，根據(jù)感染的途徑分為吸入性的肺膿腫、繼發(fā)性的肺膿腫、血源性的肺膿腫。
繼發(fā)性肺膿腫常由于細菌性肺炎及支氣管擴張、肺囊腫、支氣管肺癌、肺結(jié)核空洞等疾病激發(fā)感染可發(fā)生繼發(fā)性的肺膿腫，病人常會有發(fā)熱、咳膿痰、咳膿血痰等，血源性肺膿腫常由于皮膚外傷感染引起膿毒癥。
