紅細胞的正常參考值在男性、女性和新生兒都是不一樣的。成年男性正常值是4.5到5.5×10^12/L，女性是3.5到5.0×10^12/L，新生兒是6到7×10^12/L，紅細胞低于以上范圍，是紅細胞減少，即貧血的范疇。
當紅細胞數(shù)值超過參考值，認為是紅細胞增多，紅細胞增多包括相對增多，是血液濃縮的問題，還有絕對增多，絕對的紅細胞增多包括繼發(fā)性的紅細胞增多，和真性紅細胞增多癥。繼發(fā)性紅細胞增多，主要是呼吸系統(tǒng)疾病、高原居住的原因造成的，真性紅細胞增多癥多數(shù)情況下存在基因異常。
